Derwent Valley

The Derwent Valley Council, which takes its name from the River Derwent, is a Local Government Area in the state of Tasmania. It is located about 77.5 kilometres north-west of the metropolitan city of Hobart, the state capital. Its estimated population of just over 10,000 people has taken residence over a land area of 4,111 square kilometres.

The Derwent Valley Council, with New Norfolk as its Council Seat, is part of the Federal Division (in the Australian House of Representatives) and State District (in the Tasmanian House of Assembly) of Lyons. Its surrounding Local Government Areas are Central Highlands, Glenorchy, Huon Valley, Kingborough, Southern Midlands, and West Coast.

Considered one of Australia's most scenic locations, Derwent Valley offers much for locals and visitors alike to appreciate, experience, and remember:

Enthusiasts of various sports can participate in the regular and special activities of the different clubs in the area. Some of the more prominent ones include the Amateur Swimming Club of New Norfolk, Derwent Valley Croquet Club, Derwent Valley Field and Game Association, Football Club, New Norfolk Anglers Association, New Norfolk Bowls Club, New Norfolk Golf Club, New Norfolk Tennis Club, and Rowing Club.

Derwent Valley also has quite a lot to offer those who are more inclined towards art, history, and culture. Some of the best opportunities to enjoy these are provided by the Derwent Valley Community Choir, Derwent Valley Concert Band, Derwent Valley Country Music Club, Derwent Valley Regional Arts, Historical Information Centre, Line Dancing Club of New Norfolk, and New Norfolk Camera Club. One event that is particularly interesting and fun is the Autumn Festival, which is held each April and attracts some 20,000 people annually to enjoy its various activities, exhibits, and food and wine.

Those who would like to spend time outdoors in communion with nature, or simply to take snapshots of picture-perfect sights, will surely find Derwent Valley engaging. Some of the best locations for these are Arthur Square, Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, Lake Saint Clair National Park, Mount Field National Park, The Esplanade, and Tynwald Park.
